Boosting Your Immune System – Part 1

If you would like a session with Louise to discuss how to boost your immune system, please scroll to the bottom of this post for a special covid-19 discount.

My sister-in-law, Ann Mullen, has now sewn over 1,000 face masks for the hospitals, police stations, and healthcare workers, as well as family and friends.  She made me a bunch so that I can be ready to go back to the office.  I am still not used to “not” seeing people when I am at the store or even just driving down the road.  It seems so surreal like we are watching a movie – but we’re not.

There are 2 big questions that are on a lot of people’s minds right now – when will things reopen and what will that look like?  I struggle with these questions myself and wonder what life will be like at Wellspring when we finally get the OK to open.

When we were first learning about Covid-19, I had clients who were coming in very concerned.  I was holding firm in those first few weeks that this was just another virus and that we should be treating it as such.  When the number of cases started to rise, the supplies started to dwindle, and the hospitals became overwhelmed with cases, my attitude changed and I was fully on board with closing down and staying home to help mitigate the spread.  I still feel like this was the correct action.  I was not and still am not so concerned for myself, but I do not want to be responsible for spreading the virus to populations that may not have the immune system to handle it.

That seems like what it is all coming down to … the immune system.  Why would one person test positive for the virus and have absolutely no noticeable symptoms, while another person tests positive, gets seriously ill, and maybe even dies?  There is no other explanation at the moment than their immune systems.  So what does that mean?  What does your immune system have to do with catching the virus?

Our immune systems are our first line of attack against foreign invaders and it has three primary tasks:  identifying threats and removing them; neutralizing pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi; and destroying dead or malfunctioning (including cancerous) cells within the body.  Before our immune system can go on attack, it first needs to differentiate between “self” and “non-self” to identify a true threat.

What does that look like?

There are specific proteins located within or resting on the surface of harmful bacteria, fungi, microorganisms, and viruses called antigens which help to trigger the immune response.  When these antigens come in contact with an immune receptor, the immune system respond by neutralizing, removing, or destroying the threat.  As part of the immune response, the body make antibodies which not only help to destroy the invader but also stay around in your body so that if that foreign invader tries to come back, they will be ready to attack and defend the body.  This is the hope with the Covid-19 virus – that those that catch the virus and create antibodies will become immune to the next round of infections. Our immune systems function in a complicated cascade of events that most of the time works beautifully to keep us safe and healthy.

So what does this have to do with reopening the center?

Our immune systems are our first line of defense and at the moment, the only line of defense that we have against this virus.  As we start to reenter the world – going shopping, going to the doctors, socializing with our family, friends, and neighbors, maybe even going out to eat – we need to be prepared with something other than a face mask and gloves.  It is important that we make sure our immune systems are functioning at their optimal level so that if we come in contact with the virus, our bodies will respond and ward off the attack.

How do we do make sure that our immune system is functioning at it’s optimal level?

Look for Part 2 of “Boosting Your Immune System” for more information on how inflammation can reduce your immune system and some of the strategies to help reduce it and optimize the immune system so that we can reenter the world with confidence and resilience.

Demystifying the FMMP

There are many different kinds of fasts out there:  water fasts, the master cleanse, the cabbage soup dietary fast, bone broth fasts, and any number of detoxification fasts.  What they all have in common is you can begin them at any time no matter what you eat on a daily basis or how healthy or unhealthy you are. In other words, one day you are eating McDonald’s and the next day you are doing nothing but drinking spicy lemonade (the master cleanse).

We do not believe, based on our combined 53 years in the field of holistic health and integrative medicine, that this is a good idea or game plan.

What will that actually do for a person? Will there be any lasting effects?

That depends on what you want. If you want to reset after a vacation or the holidays, a fast may be ok. You will lose some water weight and reduce your toxic load.

If you want to make a lasting change, that will not work.

We are offering a lasting change, or at least a good shot at it, with our Fasting Mimicking Mindfulness Program (FMMP).

So what exactly does this FMMP entail?

The program begins with a 3 week preparation phase that includes:

  1. Dietary recommendations that eliminate inflammatory foods to help your body prepare for the 5-day fast
  2. Goal setting worksheets to help you to stop and think about why you are doing the program, what you hope to accomplish, and what changes you want to make in your life once it is completed
  3. Introduction to mindfulness to help you get started with a daily practice and audio recordings to do each day
  4. A zoom meeting to meet your fellow participants and ask any questions as we embark on the 3 week preparation phase
  5. The establishment of a participant email support group that will be monitored by Anita and Louise along with private email options
  6. A copy of all of the recipes needed for the 5-day fast that you can prepare ahead of time and freeze, along with a shopping list for ease

 The next 2 weeks include:

  1. The 5-day fasting mimicking mindfulness program with what to eat daily plus meditation and mindfulness practices for AM and PM
  2. A zoom party to celebrate your accomplishments and talk about your experience
  3. Recommendations for coming off the fast
  4. Post mindfulness practices
  5. One week for follow up questions and concerns related to implementing your goals and practices

The FMMP is more than just abstaining from food and drink; it is an invitation to go inward and take some time with and for yourself.  It is a complete program that will offer you benefits beyond the actual 5-day fasting period. It is designed to engage you on all PEMS levels (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual) in order to gain health and wholeness

” As a first time FMMP participant, I expected this to be challenging. But the foods were DELICIOUS and filling. Anita’s and Louise’s daily guidance was invaluable, and I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again.” Karen

We look forward to having you join us on this exciting, life-changing journey!  Sign up here now. Or call for more info 570-421-3708.

On a personal note…

…still undecided about whether the Fasting Mimicking Mindfulness Program (FMMP) is for you?

Listen as Anita and Louise give the details of their groundbreaking, science inspired protocol.

Read a letter from one of our participants:

Dear Anita and Louise, Thank you for offering this wonderful opportunity. The Fasting Mimmicking  Mindfulness program helped me achieve some planned goals and has many additional benefits as well.

Here is my experience in a nutshell. The fear of the fasting was greater than the reality. Before fasting, one wonders, “How hungry will I be?  The side effects listed are concerning. Which ones will I experience? Will I be able to carry on my usual daily activities?”  The answer for me was a resounding yes. Most people can do this. Yes, it takes a little perseverance. It’s great to do it with a friend and the support network provided is helpful. The food tastes great – I will make most of these recipes again. There were moments of hunger and a headache or two, but the meals were filling and the snacks were great. The mindfulness activities with the fasting was a great combination. Ultimately, the mindfulness activities provided me with clarity on a number of issues. In fact, a day after the fasting program ended, I had a big break through in my thinking on a major life decision. By taking care of myself, and having some time to think about things made a difference in ways I never imagined. Indeed, I already have a different relationship with food, lost weight, gained new focus and improved my life. I will do the fasting mimicking program again.

Sincerely, Deb

Autophagy and our FMMP

We are getting excited as people are signing up and coming onboard for our Fasting Mimicking Mindfulness Program or FMMP.  One of the biggest benefits is *Autophagy or cellular Spring cleaning.

The physiological benefits of fasting include anti-aging (and even anti-cancer) activity by turning on a process in the body called “autophagy,” which triggers the body to “clean up.” In this process, our cells remove damaged contents so they can be metabolized and excreted from the body.

Autophagy is a natural way to get pathogens and abnormal contents in cells out of the body. Autophagy provides anti-aging benefits and potentially even some anti-cancer benefits, because when cells act abnormally and replicate in an uncontrolled manner, that’s essentially how cancer develops. Autophagy removes these abnormal or damaged cells before they get out of hand.

So, fasting turns on autophagy and the fasting mimicking diet seeks to engage that process without having to stop eating completely. In short, you still eat food but calories are limited (800-1100 calories per day), and in theory you still get the benefits of fasting.

Lab trials on the Fasting Mimicking Diet:

The outcomes of the first small scale human trials of Fasting Mimicking Diets or FMD are reported by Dr. Valter Longo as including:

  • Reduction in blood glucose and large increase in ketones
  • 25%+ reduction in circulating Insulin Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1)
  • Reduction in C-Reactive Protein (CRP)
  • Positive changes in cholesterol and triglyceride levels
  • Reduction in body weight
  • Improvement and Rejuvenation of the Immune System
  • Activation of *Autophagy

Gratitude Abounds

This morning an angel appeared in the sky – well, that is what I saw in the clouds. I am not sure if angels are real, but I do know that if they are we are walking with them every day. You, our patients, friends, family, and loved ones, are the angels among us. You help to lift us up. You inspire us to be better healers, sisters, friends. You allow us to see beyond our tiny troubles and open us to the beautiful sky available in and around us.

This day gratitude abounds out loud -maybe as a way to allow us to pause and take a moment to realize what is here daily.

Thank you.

Love, Anita and Louise (co-directors, Wellspring Holistic Center)

Poems to Myself -3

remember this,
write it on the
of your day:
the clouds will always
have your back
so will your sister
and brother
the couch will forever
be stained
with love
you will like wearing
most days
but your feet
will want to touch
the ground
so that you remember
this life
and each person
