Write the Body – Move the Mind

Tuesday, February 20th  7:00-8:30pm EST Online Class (Zoom link below)

Mondays, March 11th and April 15th 7:30-9:00pm Online Classes (Zoom link below)

Cost: Sliding fee scale $15-$20 per session (payment options below)

The body is our entry point. We will explore the contractions, points of discomfort, and tension patterns that we discover through short, guided visualizations that begin each session. We will use somatic inquiry to move into the tissues and then out of the inquiry and to the blank page where the body will tell us the story that the mind will record. We will use music, intention, and sharing to bring the body and mind into a conversation with the heart. All are welcome. You do not have to be a dancer or a writer to attend.  You simply need a small space to move in standing, seated, or lying down, a candle, paper, a pen, curiosity, and willingness to meet what arises.

(read more about the process at the end of this page)

Write the Body. Move the Mind (explained)

Proprioceptive Writing and Somatic Movement

You are invited to do this practice on your own as well as in the group.

Here is the practice:

  • Begin by lighting a candle and preparing your paper, pens, and anything else you need. For the Somatic movement tribal music, electronic music, trance/ecstatic dance music is recommended. For Proprioceptive Writing Baroque Music (Largo movement) is recommended.
  • Do a brief meditation/visualization to come into the present moment, rest as the awareness that watches everything arising, and falling away, and scan the body to find areas that feel stuck, contracted, tense, or any sensation in a body part that makes you curious.
  • Move for at least 15-20 min.
  • Allow the body part or body parts to lead the movement. When you get lost or distracted come back to the body part and start to allow it to lead again. Do this as often as needed.
  • Keep an open mind and heart to allow the body the time and space that it needs to speak. Get close to it. Become intimate with it. Go slowly into the movement to invite the body part to lead. Thoughts will come and go Feelings may also arise. Just allow them but do not follow them.
  • When the music is over go immediately to your blank page and begin to write from the body part, let it speak.
  • Write for 20 -25 minutes using the PW model (see below)

There are 3 simple rules in Proprioceptive Writing:

3 rules:

  1. write what you hear.
  2. listen to what you write – create a listening presence. No need to judge, edit, censor, this is stream of consciousness writing.
  3. use the Proprioceptive Question – what I mean by? (always write out the question and write what you hear as the answer).  this is a great tool for when you feel stuck in the flow of your writing or when a word or phrase catches your attention, and you want to know more about it. you will be amazed at what can come out of this question.

Use these 4 concluding questions when you are finished your write.

          4 concluding questions:

  1. What thoughts were heard but not written?
  2. How or what do I feel now?
  3. What larger story is this Write a part of?
  4. What ideas came up for future writing?

Read your write out loud.

Blow out your candle as you thank your body/mind for all it offered and all you received.
